![]() ![]() Who uses film now? Probably for photographers who continue to use 60mm films or larger formats. I am wondering whether a new scanner these days would have the negative scanning function built into it since digital photography has already taken over film photography. So I am calling off this mini project of mine to make digital prints from scanning film negative. A 600 dpi scan will produce a print size of 800 pixels in width with surface defects. Not a very efficient way to make digital prints from the negatives, also judging from the fact that the print is only measuring 400 pixels in width. Total time taken for 6 negatives was about 25-30 mins. The time taken to scan and produce a digital print from the negative is about 5 mins for a single scan. It would take some time to clean them out. I bumped up the scan resolution to 600 dpi to produce a larger digital print but now I could see many other defects of the negative appearing on the final scan. At this juncture, I wasn’t sure whether the negatives are scanned at a specific resolution size. The final scan wasn’t big even though I selected them to be scanned in 300dpi. You can select one or all to scan into digital print. It took 2-3 minutes to reveal the preview scan, arranged into 6 thumbnails of the positive. The scanning software has a function to solely scan negative. It look somewhat like this, just a little different. It wasn’t difficult to figure out how to insert negative strips into the holder which is also good for positive films. I have to remove the white document cover backing for scanning document to reveal the plastic 35mm strip holder. It took me like 5-10 minutes to figure out how it works. For the first time since I bought the scanner, say maybe in 2011 or 2012, I attempted to scan the negative. It is an Epson Perfection scanner as indicated in the title. Not certain what to do with it, I left it hanging for a long time before I decided to test out the scanner that I bought many years back. Yes I found some when I was clearing the store and the shelves. Who scans a film negative with a scanner nowadays? No one unless you found a roll of coloured negative. ![]()
